It takes more than hope

Dear Farhad, Of course, as a Common Dreams reader, you know our value as a reliable, daily source of the best progressive news and opinions, posted on one uncluttered, easy-to-read site. But what you may not know is that we also do the legwork for many other independent news organizations and educational institutions. Time and again, we hear from reporters and researchers, media professors, bloggers and activists, who say they count on Common Dreams for information and inspiration. Many of these turned to us to find the independent voices in the horrific early days of the Bush administration - with the 9/11 response of the “war on terror”  and the PATRIOT ACT, and the blind flag-waving patriotism of the corporate media that denied many voices of reason.   And we, in turn, relied on you to keep going. With your help, we’ve continued to grow and to prove that  we, the people, can create a viable, meaningful alternative to today's over-commercialized media - an alternative with real and widespread influence. For nearly 15 years, Common Dreams has relied on you, our readers, for the bulk of our support. Your support is vital to our survival. And the impact of your generosity reaches far beyond the doors of this one organization. Your generosity fuels not only Common Dreams, but a network of small media outlets that spread the truth and bring the progressive message to ever wider audiences. Even when the news is so awful it seems we are bringing you our “common nightmares” rather then our common dreams, the progressive message has always been one based in hope. Hope for a truly democratic society. Hope for social justice for all, not just the lucky or wealthy few. Hope for healthier planet. Hope for a better, more peaceful, future for our children. Yes, we are hopeful. But we know it takes more than hope. It takes vision. It takes perseverance. It takes the hard work and loyal support of people like you, who believe that together, we truly can make a difference. Can you give today? We can’t do it without you!
