Pushing back against the lies

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad,

Only $10K to go to put the thermometer away for another few months. Can you pitch in?

Common Dreams is just like most of us. But, rather than paycheck to paycheck - we get by campaign to campaign. No money in the savings account, no trust fund to dip into, and no cushion to fall back on. Each campaign keeps us going a little further.

And it's been working for nearly 15 years.

Most of us don't have the deep pockets of Murdoch or the Koch brothers, but by standing strong together we can push back against their lies and misinformation. Everyone pitching in a little adds up to the whole.

Together, we can keep publishing the work of some of the world's brightest visionaries and most courageous advocates for change. Fulfilling our mission: To inform. To inspire. To ignite change for the common good.

You know we can't do it without you - please give today!

With gratitude and solidarity,

Malory
for the whole Common Dreams team

P.S. If you can give generously, please do - many of our readers cannot even afford a little. If you cannot give at all - please help grow our community by spreading the news.  Peace.

The complicity of the corporate media

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

“[T]he ten-year occupation of Afghanistan has been notable for the hyperbole relied upon by America's compliant media as well as its brazen inconsistency.”         ~Ted Rall

Dear Farhad,

We couldn’t agree more!

On Common Dreams today, Ted Rall highlights the level of complicity of the corporate media in helping to sell the public on the ten year war of aggression in Afghanistan. As he points out, “all wars demand contempt for The Other”. But when waging a war of naked, unprovoked aggression there is a need to rely on an even higher level of enemy dehumanization than usual in order to maintain political support for the sacrifices on “our side” that occur.

And, unfortunately, the corporate media has been doing their part in this scenario.

Common Dreams has been committed to shedding light on these critical issues, and to publicizing the analysis and actions of the people who are fighting back against the corporate machine.

Common Dreams was here for you in the dark days of 2001 before Bush's global “war on terror” began, highlighting the lies in the administration’s post 9/11 arguments.  And we will be here for you after we bring this too long nightmare to an end.

We need to raise $50,000 this month to meet our quarterly budget and stay on track financially, and we still have $15,500 to go.

Can you sustain the effort by making a donation today?

We truly can’t do it without you!

Malory Shaughnessy

No Corporate Pockets

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad

You rely on Common Dreams for your daily dose of insight amidst the chaos. When Common Dreams was down due to a server overload last weekend we heard from so many of you that you wouldn’t know what to do without us.

We feel the same - we can’t do this work without you!

As you know, our budget is tight and our staff is small. We stretch our resources and rely on our readers through online fundraising efforts. We do not want to be in the pockets of any corporate interests or single large contributor.

We know you don’t want us deciding what we publish to please any special interest - we couldn’t live with ourselves if we did.

So we have to ask you - our readers - to pitch in with whatever amount you can, when you can, to keep Common Dreams, and our progressive news and views, expanding our reach.

We need to wrap up this summer fundraising campaign and reach our $50,000 budget goal. Can you help us raise the $18,750 more we need to keep Common Dreams going?

Every day we’re seeing more and more people reading and sharing Common Dreams articles. Together, we’re growing a community in pursuit of hard-hitting truth and in depth analysis, and creating the expression of a progressive vision of justice and peace.

Please give today and keep Common Dreams here for you - and the progressive community!

Thanks for all you do,

Malory Shaughnessy
for the whole Common Dreams team

P.S. Every little bit helps bring us closer to our budget goal. But if you can give generously, please pitch in extra for those that cannot! Thanks so much!

It takes more than hope

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad,

Of course, as a Common Dreams reader, you know our value as a reliable, daily source of the best progressive news and opinions, posted on one uncluttered, easy-to-read site.

But what you may not know is that we also do the legwork for many other independent news organizations and educational institutions. Time and again, we hear from reporters and researchers, media professors, bloggers and activists, who say they count on Common Dreams for information and inspiration.

Many of these turned to us to find the independent voices in the horrific early days of the Bush administration - with the 9/11 response of the “war on terror”  and the PATRIOT ACT, and the blind flag-waving patriotism of the corporate media that denied many voices of reason.

And we, in turn, relied on you to keep going.

With your help, we’ve continued to grow and to prove that  we, the people, can create a viable, meaningful alternative to today's over-commercialized media - an alternative with real and widespread influence.

For nearly 15 years, Common Dreams has relied on you, our readers, for the bulk of our support.

Your support is vital to our survival. And the impact of your generosity reaches far beyond the doors of this one organization.

Your generosity fuels not only Common Dreams, but a network of small media outlets that spread the truth and bring the progressive message to ever wider audiences.

Even when the news is so awful it seems we are bringing you our “common nightmares” rather then our common dreams, the progressive message has always been one based in hope.

Hope for a truly democratic society. Hope for social justice for all, not just the lucky or wealthy few. Hope for healthier planet. Hope for a better, more peaceful, future for our children.

Yes, we are hopeful. But we know it takes more than hope.

It takes vision. It takes perseverance. It takes the hard work and loyal support of people like you, who believe that together, we truly can make a difference.

Can you give today? We can’t do it without you!

In gratitude,

Craig, Andrea, Jon, Malory, Abby and the whole Common Dreams team.

P. S. Every little bit helps bring us closer to our budget goal.
But if you can give generously, please pitch in extra for those that cannot!
We are still $21K away from our goal to end this campaign. Thanks so much!

Common Dreams needs you today!

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad,

We hear all the time from our readers that we sustain them in their work and activism. We show them that there are others like them - pushing back against the corporatocracy - fighting every day for a just and sustainable future. We Can't Do It Without You!

You need to know you are not alone. You need to have access to the truth - to be able to act on it!

Common Dreams offers one of the only sources of "real" information still available to a world that is being lied to by the media and the government on a daily basis. ~Jim in New Mexico

You give me hope in my fellow American and in our future! ~Sarah in Wisconsin

Thanks for your great work and very effective website. I routinely recommend it to friends. ~Joe in Oregon

Keep up the good work...you provide an invaluable service to the progressive community! ~Shaw in Indiana

For nearly 15 years we've helped bring America's progressive community together by bringing the truth to you every day...365 days a year.

But we've never done it alone.

We’ve only gotten this far thanks to your generous past financial support.

With the collapse of our economy, Common Dreams, too, has been hard hit. Our expenses continue to rise -- while our donors aren’t able to give at the same level that they have in the past.

Our Summer fundraiser - critical to our survival - is building slowly and has us all concerned.

Our funding comes nearly 100% from our readers - from you. We have no corporate sponsors. We have no pop-up ads. We don't sell or rent our mailing lists or any of your personal information. We depend on you.

If you believe that our work is important can we count on your help once again?

We can't survive without you. And survive we must - for you, and for our future!

Thanks so much,
Malory Shaughnessy
for the whole Common Dreams team

Outsmarting the corporate media

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad,

We're one week  into our Summer Appeal, and not quite half way to our $50,000 goal.

Can you make your secure, tax-deductible contribution now, so we can reach our goal and shut down this campaign?

For years, Corporate America and wealthy conservatives have been spending outrageous amounts of money to influence the media. Fortunately, we're outsmarting them. Every single day - 365 days a year - our knowledgeable and dedicated staff brings you the latest news and best progressive opinions available.

Common Dreams was here for you in the aftermath of 9/11. We were here for you during the Bush years. We are here for you today in these increasingly complex and maddening times. Bringing you the truth. And we're doing it with grassroots support from progressives just like you.

Please donate today and help keep the progressive voice strong.

It's a good value. Not just for you personally, but also for the progressive community as a whole. And for democracy.

Can you make a tax deductible contribution today to sustain this work?

Thanks! We can't do it without you!

No Compromise

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

Dear Farhad,

You cannot compromise with a tornado. You do not negotiate with an earthquake. You may duck and cover, but you do not hold out your hand to destructive forces. If you are wise, and if you are brave, you stand your ground, remain aware of those around you, offer shelter to those who have none, and when it’s done, you shake the debris off your shoulders and get to work fixing the damage. We Can't Do It Without You!

Unfortunately for us, the storm of corporate influence that has infected our democracy and the dark ten-year-old cloud of war have not yet past. Even so, our duties are the same.

Common Dreams has never succumbed to the fear of the post-9/11 era. We stood our ground against war. We railed against torture. We championed those who called for equality, justice, community prosperity, and peace. We built a home for those who shared our concerns and we nurtured a hope for a better a world before it was a campaign slogan. We do that today. We will do that tomorrow.

We do none of this, however, without your continued support.

Without you, we are quite literally nothing. We don’t exist. We close shop. Because all of our support comes from people like you who have stood their ground against calls for war and fought back against corporate greed, political intransigence, and the cynicism of defeat.

In this fight -- and it is a fight -- we will always offer you shelter. The only pledge we sign is to you. We pledge our commitment to continue this struggle and we thank you and commend you for sharing in this struggle with us. Help us today and know that no contribution is too large or too small.

Clouds do lift, but only when the winds demand it. And demand we must.

In solidarity and with deep gratitude,

Jon Queally
Assistant Editor

P.S. We still need to raise $35,000 to reach our budget goal. You can donate online in a variety of ways by clicking here. Or click here to get information to mail us a check. Either way, please contribute today!
