Small Victories & Ripples of Hope

June 7, 2011

Dear Farhad,

The daily news is usually full of our common nightmares rather than our common dreams. But there are hopeful signs across the globe -- people standing up and pushing back against the corporatocracy and radical rightwing - and winning. People power is creating change in our communities and ripples of hope are expanding.

Only with your help can Common Dreams continue to bring you the news of the powerful small victories happening everyday.

Just in the last few days Common Dreams has brought you news of small victories and ripples of hope like:

  • the young people of Spain - the “Indignants” - who are rising up and giving us all inspiring new lessons in democracy;
  • the Wisconsinites who, "with a nod to the Hooverville tent cities of the Great Depression," just founded “Walkerville” - building a new community around the perimeter of the Wisconsin capitol building;
  • the teachers in New York that are following a new curriculum, teaching thousands of students about modern-day human rights defenders, and that they too can each make a positive difference in the world;
  • the hundreds of marchers gathering in West Virginia to not only protest mountaintop removal mining but to celebrate a critical moment in America’s labor movement, the Battle of Blair Mountain - a history of heroic union organizing that the coal industry would like to literally remove from existence;
  • and the foreclosed couple in Florida who sued Bank of America - and won, marching into the local branch office with Sheriff’s deputies and court order in hand, movers at the ready to haul off furniture if the bank didn’t pay up.

Like you, we understand that in achieving our dreams it’s important that we remember to focus on the small victories along the way.

But we can’t do it without you!
