Obama Can Be Made to Withdraw More Troops | Weekly Top Ten

Weekly Highlight: Obama Can Be Made to Withdraw More Troops

Our friends at RootsAction are pushing Congress to deny war funding for Afghanistan - will you help?

The majority of Americans want the war in Afghanistan ended. President Obama promised a "significant" withdrawal this July. But what he announced last Wednesday amounted to withdrawing about 1 percent of U.S. personnel in July (10,000 withdrawn over six months from a total of 200,000 troops and contractors).

Support the Voices of Truth

Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community

June 21, 2011

Dear Farhad,

We're close to finishing our current fundraising drive. To make our budget goal and maintain our services, we need to raise just over $3,000 more.

To those who have not yet pitched in, or are able to provide a higher level of support,
this is your chance to push us over the top . . . and keep Common Dreams alive and kicking - working tirelessly to publish the voices of truth.

It heartens us to hear from our readers how critical this service is to them.
A few comments from this recent campaign:

~ Thanks for working to bring truth to those of us who don't buy into all the lies perpetuated by the mainstream media. Chris in OH

~ I’m working hard to enliven people in Wisconsin about their rights and responsibilities. Living in a heavy right-wing area of the state, I often run into much aggressive, negative behavior, but I will continue to spread the truth about current conditions, thanks to Common Dreams. Ann in WI

~ I love what you do and represent. Please keep your essential reading material coming. The world needs you. Susan in CA

And you are critical to our survival. Please help us raise the last few thousand dollars we need to continue this vital work for our common future.

You can make your
secure, tax-deductible online donation right now. Or, you can print our donation form and mail it back to us with a check.

In peace - and wishing you all a Happy Solstice,

  Malory Shaughnessy

Don't Give Up. Act Up!

June 17, 2011

Dear Farhad,

On the wall beside me is a framed award received by my father many years ago for his activism in the neighborhood in which we lived. In it is a simple paper plate with a map of the neighborhood on it and a note thanking him “for never giving up on Midtown”, handwritten around We Can't Do It Without You!the edge.

I cherish this memento. It makes me think of community suppers and neighbors gathering in response to shared concerns. It reminds me how important it is for each one of us to become active citizens, to make at least one little part of the world a better place. It reminds me everyday that what we do - as a part of this wonderful community called Common Dreams - is so critical.

Thomas Jefferson warned us, “[I]f we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed.”

But as busy as most of us are today trying to get by, staying informed so we can act in the common good can be simply overwhelming..and the Plutocrats are counting on that.

That’s why the staff at Common Dreams works so hard to bring you the truth on the issues the corporate media ignores or outright lies about, as well as the alternative solutions being proposed. In a simple format that is easy to access. So you can stay informed - and act up!

We won’t give up on this work - and we know you won't either!

Right now, we need you to pitch in and help us raise the last $12,000 for this crucial fundraising campaign. Our survival depends on our readers support.

You can make a tax-deductible gift online here now, or print our mail-in form here and send a check today.

We can't do it without you!

Thank you for being a part of this Common Dreams community. For sharing the work we do so that you and I, and many others - like my dad before me - can act and make our world just a little bit better.

With deep appreciation to you all - and to my dad - have a happy Father’s Day!

Malory Otteson Shaughnessy
on behalf of all of us at Common Dreams

Can Common Dreams Survive?

June 15, 2011

Dear Farhad,

What we hear most often from our readers is that we give them hope, which is no small feat given today's state of affairs.

For 14 years we've helped bring America's progressive community together by bringing the truth to you every day...365 days a year.

On a shoestring budget, we've shown the world that there are millions of progressive Americans who haven't given up in the fight for a just and sustainable future.

But we've never done it alone.

We’ve only gotten this far thanks to your generous past financial support.

But with the collapse of our economy, Common Dreams, too, has been hard hit. Our expenses continue to rise -- while our donors aren’t able to give at the same level that they have in the past.

Our current fundraising campaign - critical to our survival - has started very slow and has us all concerned.

Our funding comes 100% from our readers - from you. We have no corporate sponsors. We have no pop-up ads. We don't sell or rent our mailing lists or any of your personal information. We depend on you.

If you believe that our work is important can we count on your help once again?

You can make a secure, tax-deductible online donation with your credit card, or your PayPal account. Or, you can print our donation form and mail it to us with a check.

We can't survive without you.

Thanks so much,

Craig Brown
for the whole Common Dreams team

It's not the time to sit by

June 13, 2011

Dear Farhad,

The economy has hit most of us pretty hard this past year. Like you, our budget is tight. But now is not the time to sit by and let the corrupt politicians and big money interests determine our fate.

Now is the time to unite, to create a brighter, more progressive future. The tide has turned. Now is the time to catch the wave.

We're counting on you to help.We Can't Do It Without You!

If you've donated in the past, please pitch in again with whatever amount you can. And if you haven't donated before, we need you now more than ever. Please make a donation today.

It is people coming together that will win the fight for our democracy. And it is the strength of our numbers that will keep Common Dreams going. Everyone giving what they can adds up to the resources needed to counter the deep pockets funding the corporate media spin.

We still need to raise $26,000 in order to reach our budget goal this campaign. Will we make it? Yes - we must - but only if you help!

Please make your secure, tax-deductible contribution now, online or by mail.

For 14 years we've helped bring America's progressive community together. 365 days a year. But we've never done it alone.

We do it only with your help. Can you contribute today?

Thanks so much,
Craig, Andrea, Jon, Malory, Abby and the whole Common Dreams team

P.S. If you are a reader that has never given to one of our campaigns - please do it today. We need more of you to pitch in. Thanks!

Weekly Top Ten

CommonDreams.Org
Week ending Friday June 10, 2011

Campaign Update: We are one week into our current campaign but not quite halfway there.

If you haven't given yet - please contribute now to help us reach our budget goal of $50,000 this coming week.

We have heard from many regular supporters this week that have been victims of this economy and simply cannot give now.
If you have the means, please give generously to help make up the shortfall.

Or think about becoming a monthly sustaining member. A reader sent this message for us to share with you all:

"I give $10 a month to keep Common Dreams rolling into my inbox. This is a fabulous service connecting us to the wider progressive community.

"A big plus of monthly giving is that just like with Public TV, you can ignore the pledge drives and sometimes they are not as often. Don't get me started on PBS's  corporate sponsors which thankfully, we do not have to put up with at Common Dreams.

"
Please consider giving $10.00 a month or higher to sustain Common Dreams. Let's pull together here folks and support our community news service. Warm regards and encouragement for the long haul together."

Silver Linings in the Dark Clouds

June 10, 2011

Dear Farhad,

Sometimes, if you look really closely, you can see the silver lining in those proverbial dark clouds.

Now more than ever we need to see them, ‘cause the clouds have become really ominous.

We at Common Dreams know that it’s important to celebrate the small victories along the way. That’s why we seek out the news & views that inspire us and celebrate the glimmers of hope in dark times.

Third-generation union activist Mike Elk pointed out this week that "[t]he attack on workers’ rights in Wisconsin has proven to be a training ground for activists in a lot of ways that are going to pay long-term benefits..."

And he is right. Out of this right-wing assault on the workers, the elderly, our children and our democratic principles, a new generation of progressive activists is being born. And across the globe - people are realizing that they have power when they come together - and stand strong against repression and injustice.

Help us make the silver linings shine brighter.

Your tax-deductible contributions provide our operating support, enabling us to keep moving forward -- gathering and sharing both the storm clouds on the horizon and the silver lining inside. We accept no corporate support. We sell no advertising. We are beholden to no corporate interests. Common Dreams only exists because of the generous support of our readers.

Today we need to ask for your help. Can you make a one-time gift or become a monthly supporter?

Please help keep Common Dreams alive. We still need to raise $32,000 to meet our budget this campaign. If you haven’t given yet, please do now to help us keep Common Dreams alive.

We can't do it without you!

Craig, Andrea, Jon, Malory, Abby and the whole Common Dreams team

PS. There are many ways to make a donation. You can donate online directly, by PayPal, or by mailing a check.
You can also sign up to make a monthly or quarterly donation. And please don't forget to ask if your employer has a matching gifts program. Thank you!

The Big Lie...Exposed

June 9, 2011

Dear Farhad,

The big lie has been fully exposed. And no - not the lie about the congressman tweeting body parts.

The lie the rightwing has been perpetrating for nearly a generation. The lie that now almost all politicians the world over have swallowed like the tainted kool-aid in Jonestown. The lie about the power of tax cuts to unleash entrepreneurialism, create jobs, grow the economy and generally We Are Being Lied To!improve everything but sliced bread. This week we marked the 10th anniversary of the Bush tax cuts that took the Reagan supplyside “voodoo economics” and put it on steroids...and that this current administration just renewed. This week the truth is out - at least in our coverage.

Watching the corporate news this week, you might have missed the analysis that proves the only economic indicator that grew with the $2.5 trillion Bush giveaway was the gap between the rich and poor. They were too busy analyzing “sextgate” and handicapping the new batch of presidential contenders.

Common Dreams is committed to shedding light on these critical issues, and to publicizing the actions of the people who are fighting back against the corporate state - and winning.

If you rely on Common Dreams to bring you the daily news that is important to you and the analysis that goes a little deeper. If you need the dose of sanity you find on Common Dreams to keep moving forward in your own work and advocacy please help keep us going.

Not all of our readers who would like to help out are able to do so. If you can, please give generously as we are behind on our goal for this fundraiser. Common Dreams needs to raise $50,000 to meet our budget and stay on track financially, but so far we’ve raised just over $12,000. We do our best every day to bring you the news and information you can trust. Now we are asking that you join this effort by making a donation.

We truly can’t do it without you!
